UniSA STEM Wet Chemical Lab
Adelaide, South Australia

The University of South Australia STEM Wet Chemical Lab upgrade project saw the refurbishment of the existing warm shell lab to improve security and meet industry best practice.

Room N1-20 is a research project space, and not used for formal teaching. The Geotechnical Chemistry Laboratory supports concrete and soil projects. Corrosive chemicals such as epoxy and citric acid are used, so finishes are robust, chemical grade laminate, stone or stainless steel.

The refurbishment involved comprehensive upgrades and modifications to a laboratory space, with the following key components:

  • Secure entry and access
  • New perimeter and island benches with chemical-resistant tops and powder-coated frames
  • SA Water-approved silt trap on castors and overflow prevention at all sinks
  • Storage including mobile trolleys, PPE storage and hanging space
  • Max combined storage of 250L for flammable/corrosive liquids.
  • New 1500mm wide fume cupboard with neutralising scrubber tank integrated in BMS
  • Proprietary heavy-duty racking for soil storage tubs
  • New emergency stop for gas and power with Gallagher sensing & alarms

Upgrades to services included electrical, plumbing (including natural gas removal) and compressed air, new air conditioning system and safety review of emergency lighting, fire services and signage.
